This year, from 23 July to 8 August, the long-awaited Summer Olympic Games took place in Tokyo. The Latvian Television team also went there to follow the performance of all the athletes onsite and reflect the events of the Olympic Games from Tokyo, thus providing an opportunity for all the sports enthusiasts and supporters in Latvia to be informed of the course of sports events and the achieved results both on live broadcasts and a number of television programms.
This time, these Olympic Games were special for the technological solution, because, for the first time ever, a voice broadcast of the Olympic Games from the places of competitions was provided by Telia Latvija using an IP data transmission channel from Tokyo, which was especially created for the needs of LTV.
Jānis Kuiva, Head of Telia Latvija IP Division, who managed the project for the creation of the data transmission channel Tokyo-Riga and supervised the technical solution to ensure it was uninterrupted, travelled to Tokyo together with the LTV team. “Solely Telia Company global data transmission infrastructure was used to build a separated, guaranteed data transmission channel from Tokyo to Riga for the needs of LTV. Besides, technical supervision and support of the data transmission channel was provided by the professionals of our Telia Latvija IP team in Latvia,” says Jānis Kuiva. “Although the provision of separated, guaranteed data transmission channels is our daily job, building of the LTV service involved more specific requirements – for example, prioritised flow of voice communication, which provided the highest quality sound transmission from the Olympic Games media centre to the building of the Latvian Television. Besides, this channel was used to provide the delivery of live broadcasts and the prepared programme materials, as well as sooner access to the resources necessary for the LTV team in Latvia. In relation to these Olympic Games, we can certainly not only be proud of the great achievements of our athletes, but also of doing a great job in providing live broadcasts and reflections of events of the Olympic Games.”
