JĀNIS KUIVA: “SECURITY IS NOT SOMETHING YOU BUY ONCE; SECURITY TAKES CONTINUOUS WORK.”
On 5 March, Telia Latvija and the Latvian Information and Communications Technology Association (LIKTA) invited LIKTA members to the UL Microsoft Innovation Centre to discuss IT security challenges and solutions for companies in the 21st century. During the discussion, a true story of fighting off cyberattacks on delfi.lv was told.
The question ‘Is there a point to fastening your seatbelt after the accident has already happened?’ was at the core of the event, because various cyberattacks and their consequences have become more frequent and visible. To foster a more critical assessment of IT security risks, Telia Latvija specialists — Head of Data Transmission Unit Jānis Kuiva and Head of Media Service Unit Norberts Osītis—began the discussion with a review of the most typical attack methods on the infrastructure and information systems, mentioning a number of solutions for defending against them. During the discussion, Jānis Kuiva pointed out: ‘Security is not something you buy once; security takes continuous work. The security system solutions that we buy must be constantly maintained, monitored and adjusted. Does your company do all of these three things?’
